SUCCESS STORY IN CONVERTING A WELDMENT PART INTO CASTING (PART 2)

metallurUncategorized13 Comments

A customer of our partner NIAGARA INVESTMENT CASTINGS, in the market segment of the electrical metallic casing components, was looking to find a combined solution to reduce the cost of their parts while increasing the level of quality of these ones.

Our investment casting partner was approached and decided to accept the challenge. After a deep analysis of all the characteristics of the original part (a stamped assembly, spot welded together, with brazed nuts), a modified design was proposed offering a 20% cost-reduction. Moreover, the level of soundness of the part was greatly improved (one-single cast part) while some interesting options were added, such as the cast lettering identification. The only finishing step remaining was to tap the threads in the 2 holes.

The result : A solid one-cast part with multiple benefits.

Niagara has since then worked with this important account on many new projects by the trust earned through the unique solution offered to the customer.

When is it pertinent to consider the conversion of machined/weldment parts into casting?
Here are a few hints:
• When the original part requires much operations/assembly to make;
• When the machining time on the CNC is high;
• When you loose much raw material making the part;
• When certain areas of the weldment part (e.g. welding line) can weaken the part when used in severe conditions;
• Etc.
